Meet Our New Richmond, British Columbia Franchisee: Mike Powell
Like many of our Franchisees across the country, Mike Powell switched gears in his career when he discovered that Hickory Dickory Decks offers a living that includes working outside and doing what they love.
Powell comes to us from Richmond, British Columbia. Born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario, he attended Teachers College in BC and took a job at a high school in Richmond. He and his wife Lois, who is also a teacher, taught abroad in Cypress, China, and Malaysia for 16 years. It was during his time abroad that his twin daughters were born. After returning to Canada to teach, he ultimately served as a principal in BC.
Powell lives with his wife and daughters in Steveston, BC. This is part of his Richmond territory, which is located in the most southwest corner of Canada.
Prior to retiring from his teaching career, Powell spent a couple of years researching future employment opportunities. Powell, a self-proclaimed handyman, first stumbled across Hickory Dickory Decks while on the “Next Door” app.
“Hickory Dickory Decks ticked all the boxes for me,” says Powell. Since he opened for business in August, he has been training with fellow franchisees in the province, learning the “Hickory Dickory Way.” “Getting onto the job site to learn has been invaluable,” he remarked. The way that his fellow franchisees have come alongside him makes him feel like he is part of something bigger. Powell feels the history of the company, along with the support he has received in starting up, are just a couple of the reasons he is certain he has made the right choice with Hickory Dickory Decks.
“We all agree among the work crew that there is a sentiment that we’re making something and producing something in the end to bring happiness to everyone we serve. And at a high standard.” Powell says.
While Powell enjoys getting on the tools to build quality custom Hickory Dickory Decks, he has hired an experienced carpenter to help bring his customers’ outdoor visions alive. Mike Powell looks forward to the season ahead and can’t wait to do business in the communities he loves.
