Raised Versus On-ground Deck Considerations

Published On: July 22nd, 2024

If you are in the market for a new deck but can’t decide between a raised deck or an on-ground deck, you might consider many factors in your decision-making process. These might include cost, local building regulations, functionality, aesthetics, and future plans.

Cost

A raised deck or high deck is typically more of an investment when it comes to money.  Because of the nature of the project, a raised deck may require more materials in the way of a substructure and stairs and will likely take more time to build because it is raised. An on-ground deck will be easier to build because of its accessibility, and therefore, the same-sized deck can cost less.

Local building regulations

Always check with your local building authority or municipality to ensure you are meeting the requirements for your build. A raised deck may require higher railings, and there is a good chance that you will need a permit. Raised decks may also have different sub-structure requirements because of height. An on-ground deck may not need a permit, depending on where you live.

Functionality

On–ground decks are typically easier to access and may be ideal for homes where accessibility is a concern. If you are elderly or have mobility issues, an on-ground deck will likely be easier to enjoy without all the steps. A raised deck is sometimes necessary as access to the backyard comes from a second or third story.  When building a raised deck, it is important to consider whether you will want access to the backyard from the deck. If stairs are required, placement can be key in retaining the most usage for your enjoyment of the deck.

Aesthetics

On-ground decks tend to blend more seamlessly with outdoor landscaping, while raised decks can provide a dramatic addition to your outdoor space. If your property has sloped or uneven terrain, a raised deck can offset this aesthetic. Many on-ground decks do not require railings, and for some homeowners, this is the preferred look.

Future Plans

On-ground decks can offer more flexibility when it comes to expansion or modification in the future, while raised decks can allow for more features, such as a space underneath for hot tubs or outdoor kitchens.

The decision between an on-ground deck or a raised one will be determined by your individual needs, budget, preferences, and your property. The same deck built on-ground or raised can produce very different looks. The choice is up to you.
