Lakefront Cottage Deck Build in Parry Sound

Published On: March 26th, 2026

This lakefront cottage deck built on Otter Lake in Parry Sound showcases how thoughtful design and durable materials can completely transform cottage life.

There’s something special about a family cottage on the water—especially one that’s been passed down through generations. For this custom deck project on Otter Lake in the Parry Sound region, the goal was simple: create a beautiful, functional outdoor space where family could gather, relax, and take in breathtaking sunset views.

The result? A stunning 532 sq. ft. lakefront deck that seamlessly blends durability, style, and connection to the outdoors.

Transforming an Underused Space

Before construction began, this cottage had no true outdoor living area—just an aging set of steps and a small landing leading to an unused door off the main living space. The vision was to transform this unused space into a central feature of the lakefront home: a spacious new deck that would extend the family’s living area outdoors.

Designed for Family Living

With a large, active family with young children, space and visibility were key priorities. The homeowner wanted:

  • A deck that spanned the full width of the cottage
  • A minimum 15-foot projection for ample entertaining space
  • Clear sightlines to the waterfront to keep an eye on the kids
  • Dedicated areas for dining, grilling, and lounging

The final layout delivers on all fronts—creating a true extension of the cottage lifestyle.

Choosing Composite Over Wood

Initially, the client had in mind a traditional wood deck, but after discussing the long-term benefits of composite decking – especially for a lakefront environment – the homeowner chose Fiberon decking.

Composite decking is particularly well-suited for waterfront properties because it:

  • Resists moisture, rot, and warping in humid conditions
  • Requires minimal maintenance—no sanding, staining, or sealing
  • Maintains its colour and appearance over time, even in direct sun

The added durability and long-term performance of composite decking make it a smart investment for cottage living. The colour ‘Cabana’ was selected, offering soft grey-blue tones that perfectly complement the cottage exterior.

Unobstructed Lake Views

One of the standout features of this build is the ETP frameless glass railing system along the lake-facing side.

This design choice ensures:

  • Completely unobstructed views of Otter Lake
  • A modern, clean aesthetic
  • Enhanced safety without sacrificing sightlines

Low-maintenance picket railings were installed on the sides, providing a practical and cohesive finish.

Built for Strength in Muskoka Conditions

Building in the Muskoka region comes with unique challenges—namely, dealing with bedrock and challenging terrain. As most cottages are built directly on the solid bedrock, this makes drilling helical piles a challenge. For this project, we used a combination of piles and pinning to create a solid, long-lasting foundation for this cottage property. This method involves drilling into the bedrock, setting rebar with epoxy, and finishing with concrete footings for maximum stability.

The deck structure itself features a robust 2×10 frame, designed to handle the heavy snow loads common in Northern Ontario winters.

Finishing Touches

In addition to the main deck, a matching Fiberon front entry porch ties the entire exterior together, creating a cohesive and welcoming look from front to back.

The Final Result

What was once an unused entry point is now the heart of the cottage—a space designed for:

  • Family dinners under the open sky
  • Relaxing afternoons by the water
  • Watching unforgettable sunsets over Otter Lake

This project perfectly captures what a great deck should do: enhance the home, simplify maintenance, and create a place where memories are made for years to come.
