If your play surface is made from deck boards, ensure that you choose a surface that is either textured composite or vinyl or treated wood with anti-slip coatings.

Secure Gates and Entrances

Keeping the kids in and out of areas is sometimes the most important factor to consider with your outdoor play area.  Consider the dangers that pools and hot tubs can present.  Installing self-closing gates and self-latching hardware to secure the space while allowing all the fun that a great outdoor play area can provide.

Install Sturdy Railings

Depending on the height of your deck, railings should be 36 or 42” tall.  Check your local building codes. Baluster spacing should be no wider than 4 inches to prevent little heads from slipping through. Avoiding decorative elements in your rail design will prevent climbing.

Avoid Climbing Hazards

To further prevent children from climbing within their play area, keep benches, furniture, and planters away from the railings.

Provide Shade

If your outdoor space sees a lot of sun, so will the play area. Consider using pergolas, shade sails, and umbrellas. pavilions, or gazebos, to cut the heat that the full sun can create. While all these options will help with exposure to the sun, some will even create an all-weather play area, providing protection from all elements.

Keep Your Play Area Clean

It is important to keep any play area surface clean. Ensure proper drainage to avoid slippery surfaces and moldy areas. Regularly clean off debris, leaves, and dirt to avoid falls.

Designate a Kid Zone

A great way to minimize danger in your play area is to limit the space. Create a kid zone with soft play mats or artificial turf. Include storage solutions for toys to further reduce trip hazards.

Creating a child-safe deck doesn’t mean sacrificing style.  With the right materials, smart layout choices, and a focus on safety, your outdoor space can become a safe haven where kids play freely and parents can relax confidently.
