Custom Second-Story Deck with Roof in Ancaster
Outdoor spaces should feel like a natural extension of the home. These Ancaster homeowners were ready to upgrade their existing outdoor space into something more functional, integrated, and visually striking.
Their existing pressure-treated deck was too small, and while they had a separate pavilion, it was only large enough for a table. If they wanted to sit down for dinner or relax in the shade, they had to walk over to it. The whole setup felt disconnected. They wanted to be able to step right out onto a covered deck to enjoy eating dinner and entertain family.
Designing a Larger, More Integrated Outdoor Space
The vision was a space that would feel more connected to the home rather than an afterthought in the backyard. We designed a custom second-story deck with a hip roof, designed to integrate seamlessly with the home. At 210 square feet, the new elevated deck has a larger footprint, providing plenty of room for dining outdoors and a comfortable seating area.
A Custom Roof for Comfort and Shade
One of the standout features of this build is the custom hip-style roof shingled with spruce frame and Douglas fir posts and beams with an aluminum ceiling. The roof creates a defined outdoor room, allowing the homeowners to step out the door and be under cover. Built-in lighting and a ceiling fan make this space comfortable and usable day and night.

Durable, Low-Maintenance Decking
The homeowners selected Fiberon composite decking in the colour “Cabana.” They were looking for something cost-effective, low-maintenance and durable. The warm tone of the Cabana colour complements the brick of the house.
Clean Lines with Aluminum Railings
To complete the design, we added aluminum railings for a polished, finished look while maintaining clear sightlines to the backyard and surrounding landscape.
Smart Budget Choices
One of the more thoughtful parts of this project came down to balancing budget with long-term vision. Originally, the client wanted to clad the posts and beams both under the deck and on the roof. To stay on budget, we opted for a Douglas fir option that looks beautiful but keeps the door open, allowing the homeowners to add wraps in the future if they choose.

The End Result
What was once a small, disconnected outdoor space is now a comfortable and versatile outdoor living area – a space to dine, relax and enjoy with family and friends.
The homeowners were thrilled with the transformation:
“Simply amazing. Charleigh was a pleasure to work with and did not go one cent over budget. In fact, Charleigh came up with some creative ways to keep on budget while keeping the desired look and quality. The staff was amazing with Ryan leading the crew. Every day the site was cleaned up to perfection. The covered deck is better than imagined, allowing us to extend our outdoor space.”
