  • Resurfacing a deck can be a way to reduce the cost of getting a new deck, but it requires a strict safety inspection. Composite decking is heavier and more flexible than wood, requiring a structurally sound frame with specific joist spacing. During your consultation, a Hickory Dickory Decks expert will inspect your current framing for rot and code compliance. If the ‘bones’ of your deck are healthy, we may be able to resurface it; however, if the frame is compromised, we will always recommend a rebuild to ensure your family’s safety.

Static build-up can occur on composite and PVC decks, particularly in dry climates or during seasons with low humidity. It is similar to walking on a carpet indoors. While it can be surprising, it is not dangerous. As decking technology evolves, manufacturers are improving cap stocks to reduce this. Over time, as the deck weathers and dust settles, static generation typically decreases. If you are highly sensitive to this, we can recommend specific product lines that are less prone to static generation.

We consider joist tape to be ‘cheap insurance’ for your investment. Modern composite decking is designed to last 25 to 50 years. However, the pressure-treated wood frame underneath is still organic. Joist tape seals the tops of your joists and beams, preventing water from sitting on the wood frame and rotting it out around the screws. For a small fraction of the total project cost, it ensures your frame lasts as long as your premium decking.

In most cases, yes, we recommend using helical piles. Traditional concrete Sonotubes can shift if frost gets underneath them and can lead to a warped deck – this is often referred to as frost heave. Helical Piles are galvanized steel shafts that are screwed deep into the ground – often 5 feet or more – to anchor your deck well below the frost line. This is particularly important in areas with freeze-thaw cycles. Helical Piles offer superior load-bearing capacity, resist frost heave, and require no curing time – meaning your deck builder can start framing your deck the same day the foundation is installed.

Different decking materials handle heat a little differently. PVC decking, for example, tends to dissipate heat faster than dense composite boards, which can make it feel slightly cooler underfoot in full sun. One of the biggest factors in deck temperature is colour. Darker colours absorb more heat while lighter colours reflect it. A deep brown or charcoal decking board will feel warmer in the sun than a light grey, sand, or beige tone. For decks with strong sun exposure—especially south-facing spaces—we usually recommend lighter colours to help keep the surface more comfortable for bare feet and pets. Decking manufacturers are continually improving their products. Many composite and PVC boards now use heat-mitigating technology and reflective pigments designed to reduce heat absorption, helping the surface stay cooler and more comfortable during the summer months. We can also integrate shade structures such as pergolas or pavilions to create cooler zones on the deck.

Yes, propellants and chemicals in certain aerosol sunscreens and insect repellents (specifically DEET) can react with the cap layer of some decking products, potentially causing clouding or spotting. We recommend applying these sprays off the deck. If a spill happens, clean it immediately with warm soapy water. For high-traffic family areas, we can recommend specific decking lines that have higher chemical resistance.

You should never use a metal shovel on composite or PVC decking, as it can gouge the deck surface. Most decking manufacturers recommend a plastic shovel or a broom to clear snow. For ice, avoid traditional rock salt as sodium chloride can be abrasive and dry out the material. Many composite and PVC decking brands recommend using Calcium Chloride ice melts. These are effective at lower temperatures, are safer for pets and won’t damage the deck surface. If you see a white haze on your deck in the spring, simply wash with soap and water to remove the mineral residue.

A hot tub adds thousands of pounds of ‘live load’ that an existing deck frame was likely not designed to support. This requires a structural review and permit to ensure it doesn’t collapse. We handle the engineering and permitting process for you to ensure your new oasis is legal and safe.

In most cases, a roof structure that will bear a snow load requires a permit. These include roofs, sunrooms, pavilions and louvered pergolas. A fixed open pergola may not require a permit, depending on the design. If the pergola requires footings under the posts, then a permit would be required. We handle the permitting process for you to ensure your structure is legal and safe.

After you contact Hickory Dickory Decks, a deck expert will visit your home for a free consultation. They’ll discuss your needs, style preferences, budget, and timeline, while assessing your space. You’ll then receive a custom deck design along with a detailed project quote to review.

The cost of a deck depends on factors such as size, materials, design complexity, and added features like lighting or railings. Custom decks typically range from $50 to $200 /square foot, depending on customization, site conditions, and product selection.

Low-maintenance decks are typically made from composite or engineered materials designed to reduce upkeep compared to traditional wood. These decks resist fading, staining, and rotting, and eliminate the need for regular sanding or sealing, making them a convenient long-term solution for homeowners.

Many customers choose composite decking because it offers long-term durability with minimal upkeep. Unlike wood, it doesn’t require staining, won’t splinter, and provides better slip resistance. Its consistent appearance and weathering resistance make it a practical and popular choice for modern outdoor spaces.

We offer a wide range of high-quality composite, vinyl, and hardwood decking products from trusted manufacturers. Our team continually evaluates and tests new materials to ensure we provide durable, attractive, and reliable options that meet evolving design trends and performance expectations.

Composite decking has been around since 1992, when Trex first introduced it to the market. Since then, the industry has evolved significantly, with many manufacturers offering a wider variety of colours, textures, and finishes that closely replicate the look of natural wood.

Low-maintenance composite decks typically have a lifespan of 25 to 30 years or more, depending on the product and environment. In comparison, traditional wood decks often last 8 to 15 years with regular upkeep, making composite a longer-lasting and more cost-effective option over time.

The weight of composite decking varies by manufacturer and product line. Some composites may be heavier since some are very dense. Structural design is always considered during planning to ensure proper support and long-term performance regardless of material choice.

We provide a two-year workmanship warranty covering the quality of installation, along with manufacturer warranties on low-maintenance products, which are often 25 years or more. Our satisfaction guarantee ensures you only make final payment once you are fully satisfied with the completed project.

Every deck we build is fully custom, meaning design possibilities are virtually unlimited. Our experienced designers work closely with you to explore options, provide recommendations, and refine ideas, ensuring you end up with a design that fits your space without feeling overwhelmed.

Because we are a custom deck company, we provide many options to upgrade your deck, from integrated lighting to shade structures, outdoor kitchens and more. Deck lighting is the most popular add-on, as it enhances both safety and ambiance. Integrated lighting can illuminate stairs, railings, and seating areas, making your outdoor space more functional at night while also adding a warm, inviting atmosphere for entertaining.

Timelines can vary depending on the size of deck, design complexity, weather conditions and site access. An average 12 x 16 deck will usually take around one week to complete once construction begins, however depending on features (e.g. a custom roof or raised deck), this timing may change.

In most cases, a permit is required to build a deck. We take care of the entire permit process for you, ensuring compliance with local building codes. Some decks that meet certain requirements (for example under 24’’) do not require a permit. Your local franchise owner will be able to advise.

We use premium kiln-dried, pressure-treated lumber for most deck substructures, typically 2×8 or 2×10 joists spaced 16” on center, in some cases we do 12”. Depending on the project, a plastic or steel substructure may be a smart upgrade.
